Cetus the Whale…

Many moons ago…..

…on a perfect Spring day, when the sun shone bright and our hearts were full of (the usual Trevisker) grand ideas….we took ourselves off for a beach clean with some growing local heroes on our local beach. We knew we could go good in the sun, whilst also taking time to gather our thoughts and as a team plan our plastic reduction dreams at Trevisker. Little did we know we’d do no planning of our own, as we met and witnessed the first green shoots of an environmental superhero and her star Dad, Emily and Rob; Beach Guardian

There is a rich and wonderful story that underpins this stratospheric environmental stars’ trajectory, working alongside her Dad and wonderful family. Starting with an appearance on CNN for her graduation outfit and last week beaming to the world on a live broadcast. Did we mention her own series on the local news and still studying to learn more…..find out more here

ANYWAY……fast forward to 2021, we find ourselves and the rest of the world, sailing a ship through a global pandemic, whilst navigating changes to our ethos and beliefs that will change our Trevisker way of being, forever. This last week, as our little county grew to welcome the G7 world leader conference, saw peaceful environmental protests, crazy Royal shenanigans and enjoyed the eyes of the worlds media upon us, we stepped up to help Beach Guardian and friends spread their message even further.

Many of you will know that Cetus the whale has lived with us as a welcome host for quite a while now. Spreading the message of how she was made entirely with the ghost fishing gear from just 7 local beaches. Her artists Andrew and Grace have been back here in Cornwall making a film about all about her story, and her important message, find out more here

Big invitations, big lorries and even bigger adventures……

Having Cetus here, being able to host her and help to spread her message, is an honour for us. We also proudly work alongside Rob and Emily with the work of their Beach Guardian Lab here, to engage with young people and her artists continuing her good work.

Now…. everyone who knows Rob and Emily, knows that when they say they have an exciting project in mind, that you shoot up your hand and get involved, before your lips can even say the words ‘I’m in”

With the eyes of the world upon our little county as the G7 leaders came to party, Cetus flipped her tail to swim into action, with her artists Andrew and Grace by her side, and Rob and Emily to guide her safely on her adventures, she was off on her engagements for the week.

First stop was the mammoth job of moving this 8m long girl in a way befitting of her. Our local crane experts were on the case, with the team at Macsalvors there to gracefully lift and move her to St. Issey School, to meet the school children who have worked on her over the months, and secondly to meet the Prime Minister for his pre G7 climate change address.

Onward to the sea…..

With a flip of her mammoth, ghost net entwined tail, Cetus was on the move again, this time to the coast and as a very special guest of a fabulous online event. Installed at the fantastic Crowdfunder and Real Ideas Organisation C Space in Newquay, Cornwall, Cetus was the star attraction at the G7 Fringe Event overlooking the ocean and Newquay harbour.

A live event beamed across the globe to Seaspiracy followers and supporters, including Beach Guardians Emily as part of a live panel campaigning for the #30by30 hosted by our good friend Jess, owner, founder and ninja goddess of Halo PR

The other panellists were Lucy and Ali Tabrizi, the Directors of Seaspiracy, Captain Paul Watson from Sea Shepherd, Cyrill Gutsch from Parley for the Oceans, Hugo Tagholm from Surfers Against Sewage and a guest appearance from Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall.

There we were, sat in a room with talented artists and powerful speakers, media gurus and change makers, along with vibrant, awe inspiring people, driven by passion and love for our planet. All because of a chance meeting on a beach clean that happened to change our world!

So as we packed down our ocean inspired girl with Rob, Emily and the team, to return her to our door here at Trevisker for many more to meet and spread the message of the plight in our oceans, we’re reminded of the comment from our inspiring Emily on that night when asked: what one thing people can do to help change……..

Everyone cares about human well being, but not everyone cares about the environment. But, as we’ve seen with the devastating consequences of a global pandemic and rising cases of ‘eco anxiety’ if we take care and protect the environment around us; if we take care and protect the wildlife and marine life around us, we can better protect and care for ourselves and our well being” ~ Emily Stevenson
